Canine Influenza Outbreak

It's here, and it is not messing around. Pet lovers should be aware that several cases of Canine Influenza (H3N2) have been diagnosed recently in our area.  Canine Influenza can be very serious with outbreaks having an estimated 10% death loss. Recently, the City of Baytown recommended vaccinating dogs for the flu.  But beware: there are two different strains and vaccinations for both are required for optimal protection. Most of the recent cases are reported as H3N2, or what most of us call the Chicago Flu.  It is the newest strain to enter the United States.  We here at Abshier-Meuth diagnosed the first case of it in Texas in May of 2015.  That case was properly quarantined and thus did not

In The Heart(worm) of America

We live in the worst place in America for Heartworms. As you look at the recently-released chart for the incidence of heartworm disease, you will see no place in the U.S.A. is worse than coastal Texas. In the worst areas, reporting veterinary clinics saw at least 100 cases per year. At Abshier-Meuth Animal Hospital, we diagnose many more than 100 cases per year, and we see dozens of pets yearly with failing hearts due to these parasites. Preventative medication is very effective and [a month supply] can cost as little as a trip or two to Starbucks. Once a dog contracts heartworm disease, treatment can cost many hundreds of dollars. Please don't forget to prevent this terrible illness.
